Almuten of the Chart & Thematic Almutens
Find the almuten of the chart by Bonatti or Ibn Ezra and the almutens of topics: life, father, mother, marriage, death and your own topics.
What it is and why it matters
An almuten is the planet with the highest total of rulership points over a set of chart places. The almuten of the chart uses the places of life; a thematic almuten uses the places of one topic, such as the father or marriage. The table shows which dignities make up every point.
When to use it
- To find the almuten of the chart by a named method and check every condition.
- To compare topics and see where two planets are nearly equal.
Terms explained
- Almuten
- The planet with the highest rulership score for a point or group of points under the chosen dignity rules. The result depends on the scoring system.
- Dignities
- Rules used by an astrological school to evaluate a planet’s position by sign and degree. Domicile, exaltation, bounds and other categories depend on the selected profile.
- Astrological lot
- A calculated point derived from the longitudes of other chart points. A formula may combine Asc, the Sun and the Moon and have different day and night versions.
Where to find it
Tools → Tables → Almutens, or Analysis → ••• → Dignities → All Almutens.
How to use it
- On the left, choose a method for the almuten of the chart: Almudebit · Bonatti (28 places, essential dignities only) or Lord of the Nativity · Ibn Ezra (five hylegiacal places, house, rulers of the day and hour, phase).
- Read the matrix: each row is a condition with its degree, the columns are the seven planets. A cell such as 5+3+1 shows domicile, triplicity and face; clicking or focusing it explains the points in words. On the right is the row's winner; at the bottom, Points and Shares.
- Use the checkbox beside a row to switch off a condition your method does not use: it turns grey and is not counted. Checkbox states are saved separately for each method and topic.
- Above the table, choose whether all three triplicity rulers score, and the term and face systems. For Ibn Ezra you can also choose the house points table.
- Under Thematic Almutens, open All Topics or a topic from the list. + New Topic opens the editor: a name and places (type, value, the degree itself or its ruler's). A built-in topic can be copied and the copy edited.
Settings and options
Select an option to learn how it works and when to use it. The label beside its name shows whether it affects calculations, chart appearance or data.
Almudebit · Bonatti / Lord of the Nativity · Ibn EzraCalculation
Two methods for the almuten of the chart with different sets of conditions.
- What changes
- Bonatti counts 28 places by essential dignities only. Ibn Ezra counts five hylegiacal places plus accidental rows with subtotals.
- When to use it
- Use your school's method and name it with the result.
Count (row checkbox)Calculation
Switches one condition on or off.
- What changes
- A switched-off row is grey and left out of points and shares; its cells stay visible. The state is saved for the method or topic.
- When to use it
- To reproduce a 27-row list, switch off “Ruler · Imum Coeli” or “Ruler · Prenatal Syzygy”.
Points CellAction
The breakdown of a planet's points in one row, such as 5+3+1.
- What changes
- Clicking or focusing shows an explanation in words under the table: domicile 5 + triplicity 3 + face 1.
- When to use it
- Check which dignities make up the points, not only the total.
All Three Triplicity RulersCalculation
How many triplicity rulers receive 3 points.
- What changes
- Off: only the ruler of the chart's sect. On: the day, night and participating rulers of Dorotheus.
- When to use it
- Leave it off to match the most common desktop results.
Bounds (terms)Calculation
The term table for 2 points.
- What changes
- Egyptian terms are the common standard; other tables change the term ruler and the points.
- When to use it
- State the term system alongside the result.
FacesCalculation
The decan table for 1 point.
- What changes
- Chaldean faces are the standard; other variants change the face ruler.
- When to use it
- Change it only when your method requires it.
House PointsCalculation
Ibn Ezra's points for the planet's house.
- What changes
- Common Table: 8th house 4, 9th 5. Sela's Edition: 8th 5, 9th 4, as in the critical edition of Sefer ha-Moladot.
- When to use it
- The difference only affects planets in the 8th and 9th houses.
“Close” when the lead is ≤Appearance
The threshold for the “close” badge in the topics overview.
- What changes
- A topic whose first and second planets differ by no more than the threshold gets the badge; a tie is marked separately.
- When to use it
- 2 points by default; raise it to see more contested topics.
New Topic: Name / Type / Value / TakeData
The editor of a custom topic.
- What changes
- Type is a planet, angle, Lot of Fortune, syzygy, cusp, planets in a house or a lot; Take is the degree itself, the sign ruler's degree, or the table's day, night or participating triplicity ruler's (whatever the sect). A topic can be edited, copied or deleted; a name already in use gets a number.
- When to use it
- Copy a built-in topic when your author adds or drops places.
The result
The heading names the almuten by points, separately the leader by shares, and the lead over the second planet. A tie shows every winner.
Worked example
This is a teaching example; results for your chart may differ.
- Situation
- Two planets differ by one point.
- What to do
- Open the matrix, read the rows where they score, and switch off conditions your method does not use.
- How to read the result
- The lead and any tie are shown plainly; choosing between close candidates is left to the astrologer.
For professional practice
Declarative conditions let you reproduce Bonatti's list, a list from another program or your own, with points and shares on one screen.
What to check for a precise comparison
Record the method, the number of conditions switched on, the triplicity rule and the terms: the winner depends on them.
Keep in mind
Points: domicile 5, exaltation 4, triplicity 3, term 2, face 1. A share is one dignity, whatever its weight.
Traditional rulers, Dorothean triplicities; the triplicity rows are the table's day, night and participating rulers, whatever the chart's sect. The Dignities tab (⌘4) uses your rulership profile, so its numbers can differ. The source of each built-in topic is listed in the overview.
All 28 of Bonatti's rows count by default. Users of other programs often type 27: on the reference chart (17 Dec 2025, Zaporizhzhia), switching off “Ruler · Imum Coeli” or “Ruler · Prenatal Syzygy” (both Mercury there) gives Mars 96 points and 29 shares against Jupiter 95 and 30; with all 28, Jupiter leads with 105 and 33.
On the desktop, custom topics are kept in almuten-topics.json in the app's data folder and are not in the chart backup. In the web version they are kept with the other browser data and are in the backup.
The syzygy is the Moon's degree at the last new or full Moon before birth, the common desktop convention. The “luminary above the horizon at a full Moon” rule is not applied.
